Massachusetts reported 1,566 new confirmed coronavirus cases Tuesday, while the seven-day average edged down to 1,944 from 1,961 the day before.
The Department of Public Health also reported that the high-stakes campaign to vaccinate people got another 81,281 shots into people’s arms. The total number of shots passed a hopeful milestone, rising over 4 million.
The new confirmed coronavirus cases brought the total number in the state during the pandemic to 609,533. The department also reported 12 new confirmed coronavirus deaths, bringing the state’s total to 16,993.
The state remains in a struggle with the coronavirus more than a year after it arrived. Experts say fast-spreading coronavirus variants, pandemic fatigue and spring fever, and loosened restrictions are threatening progress the state has made. Officials are urging people to not let their guard down, and to get vaccinated when they’re eligible.
The DPH said 34,652 people were estimated to have active cases of the potentially deadly virus, and 725 confirmed coronavirus patients were in the hospital.
The DPH also reported that 61,251 more tests had been conducted for coronavirus. The total number of tests administered climbed to more than 19.3 million. New antigen tests were completed for 2,688 people, bringing that total to 666,203.
The DPH reported that the seven-day average rate of positive tests, which is calculated from the total number of tests administered, was at 2.5 percent.
The department said the rate would be 4.2 percent if the effect of college testing programs — in which asymptomatic people can be tested repeatedly in an effort to rapidly identify new cases — is factored out.
On the vaccination front, the total number of shots administered rose to 4,022,836, state officials reported.
The total shots administered included 2,492,756 first shots and 1,427,168 second shots of the Pfizer and Moderna two-shot vaccines. It also included a total of 102,912 shots of Johnson & Johnson’s one-shot vaccine.
The number of people fully vaccinated, with either two shots of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines, or one shot of the J&J vaccine, rose to 1,530,080.
The total number of shots administered amounted to about 84.2 percent of the 4,775,880 doses shipped to providers in the state so far, the DPH said.
The daily number of new vaccinations bounced back from Monday’s total of 37,376. Monday totals are typically the lowest of the week.
