The Celtics are waiving guard Ryan Arcidiacono and forward Juwan Morgan and both players are planning to join Boston’s G League team, the Maine Celtics, as affiliate players, according to a league source.
Boston is also expected to sign guard Chris Clemons and center Luke Kornet to Exhibit 10 deals before waiving them so they can also join the Maine Celtics as affiliate players, according to a league source.
Kornet played in 18 games with the Celtics last season after being acquired in a trade with the Bulls. Clemons had a two-way contract with the Rockets in 2019-20 and had his deal converted to an NBA contract before suffering an Achilles injury in the preseason last year.
Affiliate players remain free agents who are eligible to sign with another NBA team at any time.
Head coach Ime Udoka said before Friday’s preseason game against the Heat that Boston had yet to officially make any roster transactions, but he acknowledged that Arcidiacono and Morgan would not be active for the game.
Udoka previously said that the Celtics would value shooting most of all as they fill their final roster spots. On Friday, he said chemistry will also be important.
“More so than anything the fit, who can play well with some of the starters,” Udoka said. “You’ve seen different lineups throughout the preseason. We try to mix and match lineups. Not just our young guys, but some of the vets off the bench as well.”
Morgan spent the last two seasons with the Jazz and Arcidiacono played for the Bulls for the last four years.
Pritchard has broken nose
Udoka said guard Payton Pritchard has a broken nose but could return for the season opener against the Knicks next Wednesday wearing a mask. Udoka said that Pritchard completed some non-contact drills at the team’s training facility on Friday.
“It’s a pain tolerance thing,” Udoka said, “and if he can get out there and play, he should be fine with the mask.”
Pritchard suffered the injury in the second quarter of the preseason loss to the Magic Wednesday.
