Pedestrian killed in crash involving tractor trailer on Route 3 northbound in Chelmsford

A 77-year-old man who was standing outside of his stranded vehicle on Route 3 in Chelmsford was fatally struck by a tractor trailer Thursday, according to State Police.

The crash occurred around 2:15 p.m. in the northbound lane. State Police, Chelmsford fire and emergency personnel responded to the scene, State Police said in a statement.

The man, who was not identified, was found outside his 2014 Nissan Rogue in the breakdown lane. First responders administered life-saving measures, but the man died at the scene, the statement said.

The tractor trailer stopped about 300 feet past the man’s vehicle. The truck driver was a 44-year-old from Cambridge, State Police said.

It is unclear why the Nissan had stopped or why the man got out of the vehicle, the statement said.

The crash remains under investigation.
