Friday marked the fourth day of chaos among House Republicans over who among them should lead the conference as speaker.
McCarthy needs to secure a majority of all votes cast in the House to become speaker. With a razor-thin Republican House majority and Democrats united in voting to support their party’s leader, Representative Hakeem Jeffries, McCarthy cannot lose more than a handful of Republican votes. So far, about 20 Republicans have voted at one point or another against him. Voting will continue until someone gains a majority of the vote.
