Man suffers life-threatening injuries in Downtown Crossing assault, police say

Boston police are investigating after a man suffered life-threatening injuries and was found lying unconscious Friday night in the Downtown Crossing area, police said.

Officers were called around 9 p.m. Friday for a report of a man on the ground near an ATM on Winter Street, police said.

He was lying “face up and unconscious” when police arrived, according to an incident report. Paramedics “stated that they believed they noticed a small abrasion to the back of the victim’s head.”

The man was taken to Tufts Medical Center for further evaluation, police said.

Because the man’s injuries are life-threatening, the homicide unit is also investigating, Sgt. Detective John Boyle said. No arrests have been made.

Last April, police said they they were stepping up patrols in Downtown Crossing after a series of disturbances in which juveniles allegedly engaged in vandalism, theft, and assault in the busy commercial district.

In November, an 18-year-old man was stabbed at the Downtown Crossing MBTA stop and sustained injuries that were not life-threatening.
