Brian Amaral is a Rhode Island-based staff writer for the Boston Globe, covering shore access issues, business development, public health, addiction, birds, and the Blue Economy. He’s won multiple awards from the Rhode Island Press Association for his coverage of the Tidewater Landing development deal in Pawtucket, the search for famous shipwrecks in Newport Harbor, conditions for employees at the state prison, profiles of newsmakers, and features about Rhode Island landmarks, among other topics. Before joining the Globe, he worked at The Providence Journal as a breaking news and general assignment reporter before becoming part of the investigative team and also writing extensively about the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to that, he worked as digital producer for WBUR’s “On Point”; as the Boston courts reporter for Law360, a national business-law newswire; as a reporter for NJ.com and The Star-Ledger in New Jersey, and as the politics and government reporter at The Watertown (N.Y.) Daily Times, where he covered the state, local, and federal government. He is a graduate of Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. Originally from Chelmsford, Mass., he and his family now live in Rumford, R.I.
