Steve Annear

Former Reporter

About

Steve Annear is an editor and reporter for the Boston Globe's regionals team, covering the Cambridge and Somerville area and all of its unique qualities. He also writes the weekly newsletter "Camberville & beyond," which highlights the lesser-known activities happening in two of the area's most interesting cities. Before coming to the Globe nearly a decade ago, to help expand daily online coverage of stories percolating around the region, Annear worked at Boston magazine as an online daily reporter, often setting the day's news agenda by unearthing offbeat features and human interest stories (like the first interview with Keytar Bear). Prior to that he was the transportation reporter at the Boston Metro newspaper, where he kept tabs on the MBTA and also broke the news about the Occupy Boston movement in Dewey Square. At the Globe, he's perhaps best known for introducing the world to the “The Baby Wheel” guys, tracking down a wayward manatee that was stranded in Cape Cod waters, and explaining how a seal became a miniature celebrity after it got into the Charles River from the harbor. He also explored "Ponyhenge," wrote an ode to the view of the city while crossing the Longfellow Bridge on the Red Line, and told the tale — and love story — of a widow whose husband left an 800-pound, unmovable statue behind.
