The bowtied trustafarians lecture the plebs about how cruel and unfair it is to lock up Yummies (Young Urban Maggots) for 20 or 30 years and then go home to Weston and Swellesley secure in the knowledge that gangbangers don't commit armed robberies anywhere near where they live. Their condescension is positively nauseating.
"in which a juvenile is merely participating in a crime" Merely? MERELY? and it ends in death(s). The clown who wrote this article should have on his/her headstone: "Was MERELY murdered".
"get sentenced to life imprisonment for having merely gone along with their fellow gang members in an attempted robbery that went awry" Another MERELY! And a murder is now something went "awry". No kidding, when some gangbanger sends you to the hereafter, that is definitely "awry".
there is something wrong with the mental development of an editorial board that calls taking part in a murder as "extenuating circumstances." Maybe the editorial board of the Globe are juveniles and their brains aren't fully developed yet. You juveniles are better than the comics page.
"Meanwhile, given their age, many are good candidates to turn around their lives." Really? How so? They have no education. They have no skills. They are locked up for 20 years learning what? How to steal, kill, maim, etc. When was the last time anyone at the Globe applied for job? If they find a speeding ticket in your background check you are likely disqualified as being "unsuitable" for the position let alone "felony murder." I have witnessed a significant decline in common sense the past several decades and see no end in sight.
Maybe this will come full circle, and people will look to hire 10-year-olds to whack the killers as they come out of prison. I am sure there are parents who would offer up their offspring if the price is right.
The line in this article that infuriates me the most is, "those whose crimes involved excessive cruelty wait between 25 and 30 years before getting a chance at parole — about five years too many" Well, my mom's been dead about 19 years too many thanks to Edward O’Brien! And guess what, she doesn't get parole from death. 98 stab wounds, a broken rib, and a punchered lung – and you think that the monster who did this to my mother deserves to be eligible for parole in less than 25-30 years. Shame on you! I can only assume that the writer of this editorial has NEVER had a loved one murdered. And will NEVER have to endure a life of emotionally and mentally draining parole hearings.
