As a father of a son with disabilities, I very much appreciate the stance taken by Mr. Peters; these views are often seen on social media as well, often coming from the very kind soles working in the special needs areas of our public schools. Why is it then that these same schools still use the word "tardy" to describe the late arrival of students. Political correctness run amok or simply a time to update their lexicon too?
If one were looking for a word that describes a way below average IQ that is also usually associated with corruption, theft and a hatred for those different from them, Republican or right winger would be a good choice.
Perhaps the persistence of the word "re****ed" is connected with the mid-50s attempt to replace words such as moron, imbecile, etc, with something less offensive. As a kid I was taught that it was more polite to use "re****ed", and - in that day and time - it was. But it isn't any more and hasn't been for a long time.
“Idiot,” “moron,” and “imbecile” are not really scientific terms but they were coined by Goddard and other psychiatrists aligned with the eugenics movement in the early part of the 20th century to provide a pseudo-scientific basis to classifying people with mental deficit.
