The failure of public education to provide excellent education in these areas results in families of color choosing the charter alternative. Parents want a great school for their kids and want the opportunities, structure and discipline some of the charters provide. That is understandable, but the unintended negative consequence of segregated educational settings negates the positives a charter might provide. The only answer is to make a commitment and allocate sufficient resources to our public school systems so they can provide all that charters may offer and more. The health of our democracy depends on excellent public education and right now we are failing to provide this in lower income areas.
