I guess you did not read Renee's column last week in which she derided Bill Cosby for his crimes and said that he "used his fame and avuncular public image as a weapon to harm women."
"Kavanaugh’s hostility last week was more than just a hammy performance for a president who cheers cartoonish bluster as manly strength. It was the angry cry of a man who has been taught from birth that every tomorrow belongs to him. That anything should impede an ascension prophesied by his gender and race is an affront to the world Kavanaugh demands and expects."
This is absolutely disgusting and completely wrong. Renee, how would your husband react if he was accused of GANG RAPING women, accused of being a PEDOPHILE, accused of exposing himself and accosting a 15 year old girl?? Would he be polite to the people who spent an entire week calling him vile and nasty names, or would he defend himself with vigor and anger? If I were him, I would have wanted to lunge across the table and shake some of those morons on the Judiciary committee who spent the week telling every camera and microphone they could find what an evil, vile person I was....and THEN, when they had the opportunity to question me, or call me those names to my face, couldn't even look me in the eye when they spewed their garbage about "an FBI investigation". There isn't a person who has followed this who has half a brain who thinks the Dems care about Christine Blasey Ford in the slightest. Hell, they haven't said a word about her since the hearings. This is about delaying the vote past the midterms. If they'd just admit it instead of focusing on rape charges...then drinking....the his behavior...then his ICE THROWING, I'd have some respect for them. instead, they've proven again they're disgusting, lying, cheating politicians.
First, the delay here is nowhere near the delay for Merrick Garland, which had never ended. Second, he went into conspiracy theories. Third, he was rude and condescending and showed his prejudices. Aside from his sexual assaults, he has a terrible temperament and could never be trusted to give an impartial opinion.
As always Rene brings in the race card, "in America, a privileged white man makes the rules; he doesn’t adhere to them". Of course Kavanaugh is wrong to be upset about being charged and judged for something there appears to be no evidence to support. He has already agreed to leave or been fired from a job at Harvard because the student all know he is guilty. Though he has taught for ten years with no reported issues. Now I have read that some people think he should be fired from his current job as a Federal Judge. Again no evidence he has done anything wrong. So with life being ruined, he should just smile and say this is great. If you read Renee he's guilty and should be punished because he's white. Nothing ever changes here.
The women that carried Trump to victory in 30 states will add a net of +5 states to the Republican majority.... The Dems have only themselves and Feinstein to blame. Borking and obscene political smear has consequences.
You left out the part about the fourteen, privileged white men of the Republican Party who sit on the Senate Judiciary Committee. They are all outraged, OUTRAGED, that anyone could possibly question the integrity of Judge Kavanaugh!
Well, gee, if they were brave enough to have Mark Judge testify, they might gather some interesting information. Other than that, sexual predators usually do that in private, do what type of evidence are you seeking?
It's becoming a common refrain, but how can the Globe continue to justify printing such garbage? Bias has become an accepted norm in a dying industry, but Renee and a few of her colleagues are borderline dangerous. The opening paragraph of this "editorial" should be an exemplar of deplorable in every journalism class in America. Irresponsible at best. Overtly racist at worst. Such grotesque assumptions about why he is angry. And the multiple references to Loeb and Leopold? You should be ashamed of yourself. At some point, we can only hope your inflammatory words will be used to hurt your own misguided cause.
Honestly don' t know if he did, His behavior "defending" himself, I do know. Yes, he is in a tough place, but he went way too far, and he has been caught answering questions about his past profession choices that have been found to be false. I don't think he is suited to be a justice.
I know the Republicans want this seat, but they have plenty of candidates that would fit their requirements, they just really seem to want this guy
White privilege, yada yada yada, sure. But we still have one credible allegation of a sexual assault form almost 40 years ago and some college shenanigans. That's not good, especially what he is accused of doing to Ford.
But to write about it as if the intervening 40 years means nothing -- that's where you lose me. Of course he is still a white man. But I am not sure all of the things you are lumping together -- Leopold and Loeb, for Christ's sake? -- belong together in a cogent unit of analysis. Result: we are neither edified or persuaded of anything, except that the writer is mad.
It did work for me, the Leopold Loeb.... I know what you mean, but the feeling some have that they are just superior and beyond judgment. I have met a few of them.
Judging by many of the comments they elicit, the possibly unsalvageable segment of the populist right can't handle Renee Graham's columns. In this one and the rest she challenges their political world view. And that view is that bums and moochers, concentrated mainly among minorities, immigrants, pushy professional women, and other scapegoats routinely form alliances with elite, bleeding heart liberals to cut in front of good, hardworking people. They work the system for handouts and preferential treatment. These dregs' activities must be stopped so that the world can be put right. It's a false narrative across the board (but no space or time to get into it here today). It's also a pre-fascist pattern of thought. But it's clever, a long time in the making, and has great power. Renee challenges it, so she is the enemy. After learning a few things about Kavanaugh, including the collection of small to medium size lies he told under oath even before the alleged assault phase of the confirmation process, I recognize his type. He's from wealth, a preppy, a former jock, and someone who ran with social groups in college notorious for their misogyny and other crummy attitudes. Many people from that background survive it without becoming creeps. Many do not. As we learned, Kavanaugh is a liar. He looks to me like an archetype - a minority from a minority. He is of that subgroup of the upper classes that dives deep early on into entitlement and antisocial attitudes akin to sociopathy. Go watch some British productions for Masterpiece Theater if you want to see more examples of this character. The English have it nailed. Although not all his "class brothers" are like that, Kavanaugh's archetype holds inordinate influence compared to its numbers. The populist right wants to like this guy and trash the Renee Grahams of the world, because they know Kavanaugh would uphold and pursue their received, old and unoriginal, and dead end political outlook (manipulated into its predominant position in certain grass roots quarters by political elites for over a few centuries now). Two conclusions: Although only from the well off upper middle professional class, Kavanaugh followed a track similar to, and duplicative of the rotten overall outlook and record of the ruling class. And Kavanaugh-Trump-Tea Party fans, contrary to popular belief, are not the white working class. Careful post-election studies of Trump's support show that it, like support for the above narrative and for creep figures like Kavanaugh, cuts across all the classes.
The women that carried Trump to victory in 30 states will add a net of +5 states to the Republican majority.... The Dems have only themselves and Feinstein to blame. Borking and obscene political smear has consequences.
The comments on this column sounds like the dying cries of privilege-wannabes who cannot fathom that their world is changing dramatically and causing a loss of entitled comfort that has cushioned their now-pathetic lives since birth. Graham is merely a chronicler of our changing epoch. The Trumpistas have had their inglorious day and are being tossed into the raging waters of change. You boys should run out and buy life jackets--unless you prefer to drown in your hatred.
Boston Globe: Can I enter a report of abuse (Personal attack) of, not any of the previous comments, but of the editorial itself - in its entirety. God.
"White privilege?" I don't feel particularly privileged. Where do I sign-up? Oh, you mean I'm disqualified as I'm the oldest of nine children and I've worked hard my entire life to get what I've attained? Shucks!
It's always amazing to me that White people are so stupid. in your case, OD, you are playing at being stupid, but really, you are just casually racist. You don't care to understand the meaning of the term, "White Privilege", you just hear what you want to hear. Because, if you had actually cared enough to understand what the term refers to, you would instantly realize that your comment is complete and utter BS.
Renee, Its a good article and I agree with most of it, but when you bring Kavanaugh's race into it you lose me. What does it matter if he is black, white, or yellow. It comes down do whether or not he actually sexually assaulted Prof Ford, doesn't it. If the majority feels he actually did it then he won't get confirmed. If what you say is true, then why did Judge Thomas get confirmed. Was it because Judge Thomas was a Black privileged man. No its because the Senate in 1990 (Democratic majority at the time) didn't believe Anita Hill. Sorry but you can't have it both ways Renee. Can't blame everything on Race or the white guys.
White Privilege. The “Master Race” in America was allowed to rape black slave women with impunity. The reverse was simply not possible in American History. A Black man whistling at a white woman resulted in a lynching. Emmit Till
Renee Graham calling anyone else "belligerent" is possibly the most hilarious example of psychological projection and complete lack of self-awareness. I have never read any column of hers in which she was not spewing belligerence. She is obviously a very angry person. She is all about identity politics, toxic tribalism, and stereotyping others by race and/or ethnicity. Basically she's a classic bigot. Yet the Globe givers her a forum to hurl her invective every other day. I just hate-read her to see how racist and ignorant she is going to be. I'm sure many others do the same.
It’s privilege, period. Not white, black, brown or purple. I know plenty of women who act that way too. As liberaltoadegree pointed out, Bill Cosby used his power and privilege for years. Deval has done a few entitled things, the helicopter debacle comes to mind. People who become used to everyone kowtowing and catering to them start to be believe they earned it and deserve it. We white men perfected it and brought it to an unconscious high art, but no one is immune to the disease.
