Social Studies presents Kim Ann Foxman

The deal: Social Studies is a monthly DJ night boasting disco, house, and techno music. Each month, organizer Alfredo Rico-Dimas invites a guest DJ from out of town. Past guests have included Runaway and Justin Miller. “One thing about our guests: They’ve helped define the disco sound of New York,” says Rico-Dimas. “It was popular before, but they’re really bringing it back.” Tonight, Social Studies welcomes back guest DJ Kim Ann Foxman, the androgynously sexy vocalist known for her work with Hercules & Love Affair.

The DJs: Social Studies’ own Rico-Dimas and Brenden Wesley will open, followed by Foxman for the rest of the night.

Expect to hear: A lot of classic underground music with an old-school (but decidedly not “retro”) feel, and no Top 40. Because of her previous success, “[Foxman] has a very commercial appeal,” says Rico-Dimas. “But as a DJ, she plays records that no one has ever heard of. It’s going to be music with a lot more substance.”

The tip: Show up before 11 because the line wraps around the corner. Also, “get a beer in a can, not a bottle, if you want to dance because people always make you drop your drink,” says Rico-Dimas.
