Critic’s corner: What’s on TV tonight

Prashant Gupta/FX

Justified 10 p.m., FX

It’s such a great pleasure to have this series back. And for those of you who haven’t been watching, this season’s plot seems relatively separate from last season so it might be a good chance to jump in. As Tim Olyphant’s Raylan deals with becoming a father in the near future, and with his own father’s ever more twisted way, he is looking into a cold case. The drama is as steeped as ever in local Harlan County characters, and I’m particularly ready to love the show’s latest addition, Constable Bob, played by Patton Oswalt (above). He’s Raylan’s Barney Fife.

Cougar Town 10 p.m., TBS

Early on, the show focused on Courteney Cox (above, with Dan Byrd) as a single 40-something woman looking for fun. Wisely, creator Bill Lawrence (of one of my favorites, “Scrubs”) decided to just focus on the ensemble of actors, as they mixed together so well. Some of the best sitcoms wind up being just an excuse for a group of talented comics to play together. And that decision has made “Cougar Town” a pleasure, albeit a mild pleasure, even now as it has its second life on TBS.
