Critic’s corner: What’s on TV Friday

John Shearer/Invision/Ap

85th Academy Awards Sunday at 8:30 p.m., Channel 5

Will we have amour for Seth MacFarlane (above)? Will he go by the Oscars playbook that Billy Crystal practically wrote, or will he be unchained and become the new master? I’m hoping he’ll be brave and do the impossible by taking a flight to some new comic turf. That would be wild and less miserable. If he sticks with the usual Hollywood reverence, three hours will feel like thirty.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe: The Godmother of Rock & Roll
9 p.m., Channel 2

This installment of “American Masters” is a profile of gospel singer and guitar virtuoso Sister Rosetta Tharpe (above). The pioneer, who lived from 1915 to 1973, worked with a mixture of religious music, rhythm and blues, and pop music; check her out on YouTube, and watch the archival footage on this hourlong tribute. Among those she influenced: Chuck Berry, Isaac Hayes, Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Little Richard.
