Critic’s Corner: What’s on Tuesday night

Greg Gayne/FOX

The Mindy Project 9:30 p.m., Fox

Mindy Kaling’s sitcom returns for a second season, and my fingers are still crossed. Actually, finger-cramping is setting in. The show was perpetually on the verge of being good during the first season, but it never quite found itself. Maybe Kaling and her writers have found the key over the summer? The premiere guest stars the overexposed James Franco, which could be funny or awful. His character’s name is Dr. Paul Leotard. Coming later in the season: Tim Olyphant and Adam Pally.

Latino Americans 8 p.m., Channel 2

This three-part, six-hour documentary, narrated by Benjamin Bratt, looks at the history, politics, and economics of Latinos in the United States. PBS is describing it as the first TV series to chronicle the history of a people who’ve become, with a population over 50 million, the country’s largest minority group. The first episode goes back to the early Spanish explorers who entered North America.
