HBO is committed to the “Game of Thrones” business, as the blockbuster series heads toward its final season. The channel is looking at five competing spinoffs of the show, and it has just announced that it will also run three-part thriller starring none other than “Game of Thrones” star Kit Harington.
The miniseries is called “Gunpowder,” and it will premiere on Dec. 18. It’s about the 17th-century events that resulted in Guy Fawkes Day, with Harington as Catholic political activist Robert Catesby, the force behind the Gunpowder plot in 1605. Liv Tyler (“The Leftovers”), Peter Mullan (“Top of the Lake”), Mark Gatiss (“Sherlock”), and Kevin Eldon (“Game of Thrones”) are also in the production.
The miniseries was produced by the BBC, and it aired in the United Kingdom last month. “We are now thrilled to share this unique story with the US audience,” Harington, one of the executive producers, said. “I can’t think of a better place to do that than my home at HBO.”Matthew Gilbert can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org.
