It’s remarkable how far MTV has fallen, given its early creative buzz. Back in the 1980s, the music channel was airing shorts — some of them a little experimental — and celebrating music. Now, it’s a boulevard of broken dreams, the home of banal reality shows and worse.
What’s worse than a banal reality show? A reboot of a banal reality show, that’s what. MTV has just announced it will be bringing together a number of the franchise’s original cast members for “Jersey Shore Family Vacation.” Announced during the premiere of “Floribama Shore” on Monday, the new iteration will feature Deena Nicole Cortese, Paul “Pauly D” Delvecchio, Jenni “JWoww” Farley, Vinny Guadagnino, Ronnie Ortiz-Magro, Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, and Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino.
“Jersey Shore,” about a group of partying pals in New Jersey, ran for six seasons and was one of MTV’s highest-rated series. It spawned a few spinoffs, including “Snooki & JWoww” and “The Show With Vinny.” It left the air in 2012, but as the upcoming “American Idol” reboot on ABC reminds us, it’s never too soon to go back to the well. “Jersey Shore Family Vacation” will premiere next year.
