Mary J. Blige is coming to TV, with a role on an upcoming Netflix series called “The Umbrella Academy.” It’s based on the graphic novels by Gerard Way and illustrator Gabriel Ba, but it will be filmed as a live-action series. The story follows a dysfunctional family of superheroes who reunite to solve their father’s mysterious death and maybe save the world while they’re at it.
Blige will play Cha-Cha, a sadistic hit woman who time-travels to kill her targets. She loves to torture her victims, referring to herself as a “pain artist.” Blige has guest-starred on “Empire,” “30 Rock,” and a few other shows, but “The Umbrella Academy” will be her first regular series commitment. She is currently nominated for two Oscars for “Mudbound,” for best supporting actress and best song.
Other “Umbrella Academy” cast members include Tom Hopper, David Castaneda, Aidan Gallagher, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, and Ellen Page. The series is filming in Toronto, and it will premiere later this year.Matthew Gilbert can be reached at email@example.com. Follow him on Twitter @MatthewGilbert.
