Netflix just announced that season two of “Ozark” will be available on Aug. 31, so here is my summer-binge notice: Time to catch up with the first season.
Jason Bateman and Laura Linney are excellent as a couple in a shaky marriage who, with their two kids, move to Missouri to launder money for a drug cartel.
The story line, built on suspense and a bit of comedy, is reminiscent of “Breaking Bad,” as the family starts getting good at breaking the law. The show is filled with well-drawn supporting characters, including a local family of crooks led by Julia Garner’s shrewd 19-year-old.
Netflix has only a handful of contemporary classics, such as “Black Mirror,” but it does have a number of very decent second-tier dramas like this one.Matthew Gilbert can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org. Follow him on Twitter @MatthewGilbert.
