A ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel is on the way

Fans are grieving the end of “Game of Thrones,” when they’re not trashing the final season, that is. Now’s the time to remember that at least one spinoff is on the way, an HBO prequel series that George R.R. Martin is calling “The Long Night” while others are calling it “Bloodmoon.”

The new series, whose cast includes Naomi Watts, has just started production in Northern Ireland. I’m guessing that means it may be ready for air next year.

Here’s HBO’s official description: “Taking place thousands of years before the events of ‘Game of Thrones,’ the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of Legend — it’s not the story we think we know.”
