‘Daily Rituals’ by Mason Currey

"Daily Rituals."

"Daily Rituals."

In a fit of procrastination over a story due the next day, a young journalist named Mason Currey in 2007 searched the Internet for information about writers’ schedules and began the blog that inspired “Daily Rituals: How Artists Work” (Knopf). This compendium of the creative habits of Karl Marx, Woody Allen, Gertrude Stein, and some 150 other artists and thinkers is hard to put down. Most entries are a page or two, placed in no apparent order, skipping around in time and artistic discipline. Coffee and alcohol are a recurring theme but there’s also a commitment to “do time” with one’s muse, regardless of the outcome. JAN GARDNER
