“Gettysburg: Turning Point of the Civil War.”

“Gettysburg: Turning Point of the Civil War” (Time) is among the best of the new books paying tribute to the battle fought 150 years ago this July. It offers an hour-by-hour timeline and a chapter for each of the three days of the battle, first-person accounts, and thumbnail biographies of the commanding officers as well as essays that look at the big picture. Two essays that deserve mention are Time magazine film critic Richard Corliss’s “Where Are All the Gettysburg Movies?” and science editor Jeffrey Kluger’s examination of advances in battlefield medicine that started with the multi-tiered system of recovery and treatment designed by Union Army doctor Jonathan Letterman.
