‘Cover’ by Peter Mendelsund

Peter Mendelsund, a classical pianist turned book designer, has created covers for Stieg Larsson novels, Sonia Sotomayor’s memoir, and a host of classics. What’s makes “Cover” (powerHouse), a portfolio of his work, so interesting is that he includes not only his successes but his commentary and dozens of his cover designs that got nixed. Besides “Cover,’’ the debut author is also bringing out this month a fascinating companion volume called “What We See When We Read” (Vintage) about how the act of reading is actually a creative experience.
