‘Portraits of Hispanic American Heroes’ by Juan Felipe Herrera

“Portraits of Hispanic American Heroes” (Dial), written by California poet laureate Juan Felipe Herrera and illustrated by Raúl Colón, is a picture book aimed at readers ages 8 to 12 though it has plenty to teach older readers as well. In addition to the stories of celebrities such as Roberto Clemente, Rita Moreno, and Joan Baez, Herrera brings to light those of lesser-known personalities such as astronaut Ellen Ochoa, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Luis W. Alvarez, and David Glasgow Farragut, the first admiral of the US Navy, who issued the famous order during a Civil War battle in Mobile Bay, “Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!”
