The Whitey Bulger biopic “Black Mass” won’t be in theaters for another several weeks — Sept. 18, to be exact — but judging from a new trailer that hit the Internet Thursday, it’ll be worth the wait. Director Scott Cooper doesn’t skimp on the violence, and Johnny Depp looks exceedlingly malevolent in the role of Bulger, the notorious South Boston mobster whose unholy alliance with the FBI is the focus of the movie. (“Black Mass” is based on the book of the same name by former Globe reporters Dick Lehr and Gerry O’Neill.) Glimpsed in the new trailer are Jesse Plemons, who looks ghoulish as Bulger henchman Kevin Weeks, British actor Benedict Cumberbatch as Bulger’s seemingly upstanding brother Billy, Joel Edgerton, who plays fraudulent FBI agent John Connolly, as well as Dakota Johnson, Kevin Bacon, and Julianne Nicholson. The much-anticipated movie will premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September.
