Pops announces special guests for July 4

The 42d Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular at the DCR Hatch Shell has unveiled its list of guests for the 2015 shindig.

Among those celebrating Keith Lockhart’s 20th year as conductor of the Pops and the annual party on the Charles River Esplanade will be Broadway star and pop crooner Michael Cavanaugh — who was hand-picked by Billy Joel for the lead role in the musical “Movin’ Out” — popular “American Idol” finalist Melinda Doolittle, gospel singer and “The Voice” finalist Michelle Brooks-Thompson, drum and bugle corps the Boston Crusaders, “America’s Got Talent” finalists Sons of Serendip, and the USO Show Troupe.

As always, the show will culminate with a massive fireworks display.

WBZ anchors David Wade and Lisa Hughes will host the live three-hour telecast from 8-11 p.m. The show will also air on WBZ NewsRadio 1030 AM beginning at 7 p.m. and on WCRB 99.5 FM starting at 8 p.m.. The show will also be webcast starting at 8 p.m. at www.bostonpopsjuly4th.org and www.cbsboston.com.

Said Lockhart in a statement accompanying the announcement: “There are few concerts that I’ve conducted that come close to the thrill of leading the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular for the Greater Boston community and visitors hailing from far and wide, all of whom gather together on the Esplanade to celebrate one of our nation’s most important holidays.”
