On Demand movie highlights

(Comcast Free Movies) An earnest drama about the futility of ‘‘rescuing’’ gay men back to Jesus, ‘‘Save Me’’ presents a paradox: It’s an issue movie in which the most compassionately drawn character is on the other side of the issue. Specifically, Judith Light is devastatingly good as the Christian mother hen of a New Mexico retreat for ‘‘recovering’’ homosexuals. Costarring Chad Allen, Robert Gant, and Stephen Lang. (Unrated; runs through Jan. 21)

(HBO on Comcast) The stillness of Gary Oldman as George Smiley is magnificent to behold. This adaptation of the 1973 John le Carre novel, about a British intelligence wonk (Oldman) trying to catch a traitor in his ranks, is a model of smart restraint and telling details — an engrossing movie for grown-ups. With Colin Firth. (R; runs through Jan. 28)

(Showtime on Comcast) Refreshingly original spin puts new twists on old stuff. Repressed cop Robert De Niro and complex off-the-wall charmer thug Bill Murray can’t decide whether to become buddies or fight over Uma Thurman. Richard Price’s virtuosic script delights with its wit and panache. (R; runs through Jan. 1)
