On Demand movie highlights

(Comcast Movie Collections: Just In) If Cliff’s Notes had a dirt-cheap special-effects budget (for jet chases, tunnel explosions, steel-plant meltdowns, new sources of energy, and all of our heroine’s crypto-architectural jewelry), it’d be this watchable second installment of Ayn Rands’s beloved supernovel. (PG-13; runs through May 19)

(Comcast Movie Collections: Just In) A horror movie that aspires to be some kind of self-conscious amalgam of “In Cold Blood” and “The Shining.” It doesn’t happen even though Ethan Hawke is ready, willing, and able to take us there. He’s just stuck in a movie that’s pleased to have professionally painted over the movies that have come before it. And while the paint is welcome, it’s not enough. (R; runs through Nov. 1)

(HBO on Comcast) A computer-generated bug cartoon that’s a real hoot. Woody Allen voices a neurotic worker-ant turned hero who falls for a princess, drolly voiced by Sharon Stone. Primarily it’s the feeling of watching an old tradition scrubbed to a shiny newness that makes this such a high. (PG; runs through
March 26)
