On Demand movie highlights

AMERICAN WEDDING

(HBO on Comcast) As crass, unimaginative, and poorly made as it is, this third “American Pie” outing is a vulgar bonanza for
Seann William Scott, who reprises his role as the insatiably horny jock, bully, and dork Steve Stifler. Directed by Jesse Dylan (Bob’s son), the film celebrates the limited comic imagination of Adam Herz’s script. (R; runs through April 2)

THE MASTER

(Comcast Movie Collections: Just In) Another ambitious, powerfully acted achievement from Paul Thomas Anderson. In 1950 or so, a simple drifter (Joaquin Phoenix) falls in with the leader (Philip Seymour Hoffman) of a new spiritual movement and becomes its unwitting but eventually willing test subject. The movie is said to be loosely about Scientology, but it’s more generally concerned with the masks of performance and limits of faith in the absence of evidence. With Amy Adams. (R; runs through
July 14)

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN — PART 2

(Comcast Movie Collections: Just In) Boy, there’s a lot of standing around in this movie. In this series there’s always a lot of standing and waiting and sitting and hoping — for Edward the vampire (Robert Pattinson) to kiss human Bella (Kristen Stewart), for him to make transformative love to her. But this fifth and mercifully final installment features so much idle anticipation that it’s unclear whether we’re watching a movie or an Apple product launch. (PG-13; runs through Nov. 30)
