On Demand movie highlights

(Starz on Comcast) Under Rob Marshall’s direction this thoroughly unnecessary sequel gets the job done but just barely, and without the excellent 3-D and an unforgettably spooky few scenes in the middle it’d be a paltry thing indeed. Johnny Depp is running Jack Sparrow enjoyably into the ground. With Penelope Cruz, Geoffrey Rush, and Ian McShane. (PG-13; runs through March 29)

Ty Burr

(Starz on Comcast) Proven pulpmeister Ernest Dickerson falters with this slapdash Damon Wayans/Adam Sandler action-comedy vehicle that blatantly apes the male-bonding films of Hong Kong directors John Woo and Ringo Lam. Undercover cop Wayans gains crook Sandler’s confidence and then arrests him, but their friendship proves stronger than the betrayal. Action sequences are passable, the comedy mostly dopey. (R; runs through July 9)

(Showtime on Comcast) Deep, grave — yet full of playfulness — this final installment in Krzysztof Kieslowski’s trilogy brilliantly caps the series, which is loosely founded on the symbolism behind the colors of the French Tricolor. “Fraternity” is the notional text here, and Kieslowski indeed illustrates the fragile links between people. Irene Jacob is radiant in the lead role; Jean-Louis Trintignant is the prickly old man who supplies the necessary connection to let the story come to its profoundly satisfying implications. (R; runs through March 27)
