THE DESCENDANTS ½

(HBO on Comcast) With his wife in a coma, a Hawaii lawyer (George Clooney) has to cope with all the parts of his life he didn’t know. A somewhat minor work from director Alexander Payne that’s also a movingly rich pleasure about compromise and connection. With Shailene Woodley and Amara Miller as the hero’s daughters. (R; runs through April 8)

DON’T STOP BELIEVIN’: EVERYMAN’S JOURNEY

(Comcast Movie Collections: Just In) This overcoming-adversity documentary from director Ramona S. Diaz follows the story of Arnel Pineda, who stepped into the very large shoes of Steve Perry as lead singer of Journey. It’s an inspiring, if slightly by-the-numbers, rags-to-riches story. Who wouldn’t root for Pineda (other than maybe Perry)? (Unrated; runs through May 8)

PROJECT X

(HBO on Comcast) Matthew Broderick, as an Air Force lab assistant, talks to animals, in particular a chimp named Virgil. This pro-animal-rights film, which centers around Broderick’s efforts to keep the chimp from being zapped by a dangerous experiment, is appealingly gentle, but ultimately too tame. (PG; runs through April 29)
