On Demand movie highlights

THE NOTEBOOK ½(STARZ on Comcast) A sudser about young lovers in 1940s North Carolina is frequently interrupted by trips to a modern-day nursing home, in which James Garner reads the romantic tale to Gena Rowlands. This is two movies, one dubiously jury-rigged to the other — like “On Golden Pond” lashed to some young-adult romance. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams play the WWII-era couple. (PG-13; runs through Aug. 31)

Wesley Morris

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS (Comcast Free Movies) In this optimistic adolescent tale, two clever Upper East Side kids try to reunite their divorced parents for the holidays. Wonder of wonders, they succeed. So much for learning to cope! An ordinary movie, with an ordinary visit from Lauren Bacall. (PG-13; runs through Sept. 30)

Matthew Gilbert

(Comcast Free Movies) Sean Penn is affecting as a Pennsylvania rural type trying not to be corrupted by his criminal father, played by Christopher Walken. Mary Stuart Masterson and Christopher Penn are strong presences, too — but slow pacing and mannered visuals knock the legs out from under the film. (R; runs through May 20)
