On Demand movie highlights

ALWAYS

(Showtime on Comcast) A handsome throwback to Hollywood’s billowing romances, this Steven Spielberg remake of “A Guy Named Joe” has lots of suds, conviction, and heartfelt performances by Richard Dreyfuss and Holly Hunter. (PG; runs through May 31)

HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER’S STONE ½

(HBO on Comcast) Visually, this is a handsome rendition of J.K. Rowling’s book about the orphaned boy wizard who finds his calling at an English boarding school where enchantment is the curriculum. But it’s alive with skilled craftsmanship rather than magic. The young English actors (Daniel Radcliffe’s mop-topped Harry, Rupert Grint’s sidekick Ron, and Emma Watson’s clever Hermione) seem as faithfully right as the settings. But the film scores more on looks than it does on mood, atmosphere, suspense, or personality. (PG; runs through June 3)

BOYS DON’T CRY

(HBO on Comcast) Kimberly Peirce’s strong, haunting film based on a hate crime, the rape and murder in Nebraska of transsexual Brandon Teena. The film brings us inside the characters of Hilary Swank’s sweet, confused, spunky, complicated, beguiling Brandon, and the alienated young woman who shared his fantasy, Chloe Sevigny’s cooly smoky Lana. Fascinating in its texture and detail, the film deepens into a surprisingly profound meditation on identity and isolation. (R; runs through June 3)
