Beauty Shop½

(Comcast Free Movies) The latest entry in the “Barbershop” franchise is formulaic but extremely good-natured — a chick flick that satisfies all requirements of an easy genre. Queen Latifah is the proprietress of the Atlanta title establishment, and everyone from Alicia Silverstone to Alfre Woodard to Kevin Bacon to Djimon Hounsou to Della Reese shows up. It’s like a crowded backyard picnic, in a good way. (PG-13, runs through July 29)

Ty Burr

Blue Steel

(Comcast Free Movies) Slick, zappy, but ultimately ludicrous and disappointing blow-’em-away cop movie with Jamie Lee Curtis as the cop victimized not only by a psychotic smoothie, but by her fellow cops and — most of all — by the cynically exploitative approach of the movie itself. (R, runs through Sept. 5)

Firestarter

(Comcast Free Movies) More Stephen King. This one is about an 8-year-old girl who can start fires by squinting. Neither she nor the film is anything more than a vest-pocket “Carrie,” despite Drew Barrymore’s considerable presence. (R, runs through
Sept. 5)
