    Chronicle½

(HBO on Comcast) A found-footage superhero movie about three high schoolers who videotape the aftermath of their encounter with a glowing space-rock. Pieces of this are downright brilliant, but the filmmakers can’t decide whether they’re making fun of the genre or just going overboard with it. Paging John Hughes or Gus Van Sant. (PG-13; runs through July 22)

    Taken 2

(Comcast Movie Collections: All New Movies) This is the sort of sequel that seems to make perfect sense to the people who made it but none to us. The Albanian relatives of the men killed in the first movie by the former CIA operative Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson) seek revenge. The first movie was the divorced dad’s revenge fantasy done up as action-movie brutality. This one is action-movie camp. (PG-13; runs through July 25)

    Kung Fu Panda 2 ½

(HBO on Comcast) Jack Black is back as the clumsily heroic bear named Po in this animated sequel directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson. This time adoption and Po’s search for his true identity drive a story that’s artfully illustrated but so heavy it sometimes steps on its star’s one talent: riffing with silly abandon. Be sure you’re ready for the tough questions and images this movie presents without a care, because young viewers may not be. (PG; runs through July 31)
