Star Trek ★★★★
(Comcast Free Movies) Almost ridiculously satisfying, J.J. Abrams’s franchise reboot approaches the late Gene Roddenberry’s original science-fiction world not on bended knee but with fresh eyes, a spring in its step, and the understanding that we know these characters better than they know themselves.
(PG-13; runs through Sept. 30)
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows ★★
(HBO on Comcast) It has its pleasures, chief among them Robert Downey Jr., but the light has gone from the star’s eyes and the thrill is gone from this franchise. Jared Harris plays the ‘‘Napoleon of crime,’’ professor James Moriarty, and the scenes between him and Holmes are the film’s sharpest. Jude Law and Noomi Rapace costar. (PG-13; runs through Sept. 30)
(Starz on Comcast) It’s taken them years to get there, but the East Village junkies, drag queens, and activist urchins have finally made it to Hollywood, with most of the original cast still intact. Except for a handful of lively musical production numbers, Chris “Home Alone” Columbus directs without much zip. The result: a batch of cuddly bohemians right out of “Muppets Take Manhattan.” (PG-13; runs through Sept. 30)
