Wristcutters: A Love Story

(Comcast Free Movies) A sweetly dark road movie about suicides stuck in a Limbo that resembles the industrial outskirts of Los Angeles. Writer-director Goran Dukic’s debut feature works like a deadpan charm for much of its running time, and even if it gets cluttered and obvious toward the end, it’s hard to hate a movie where Tom Waits essentially gets to play God. Starring Patrick Fugit, Shannyn Sossamon, and Shea Whigham. (R; runs through Sept. 30)

Ty Burr

The Frighteners

(Comcast Free Movies) Michael J. Fox gives it his best as a phony ghostbuster who’s put to the test when he meets the real thing: an ectoplasmic serial killer. But the special effects (more than 500 of them) overwhelm the story — or, rather, the lack of one. (R; runs through Sept. 17)

Grace of My Heart

(Comcast Free Movies) Sprawling but warmhearted, the film entertainingly brings some pop-culture history to life. We watch Illeana Douglas’s singer-composer (think Carole King or Ellie Greenwich) make her tear-stained way from the late ’50s to the early ’70s, turning heartbreak into hit songs. (R; runs through Sept. 30)
