Bright Star½

(Encore on Comcast) A quiet, watchful, transporting film about the romance between the 19th-century poet John Keats (Ben Whishaw) and the seamstress Fanny Brawne (Abbie Cornish). Director Jane Campion stands biopic clichés on their head by making Brawne the subject and Keats the limpid love object; the result is a woman’s film in deep and profound ways. (PG; runs through Dec. 9)

(Starz on Comcast) This remake of the girl-group drama from 1976 more or less exists as a way to bid adieu to Whitney Houston, who died in February 2012, and plays the churchy mother of the girls in the group, and when she breaks down and sings near a pulpit, it’s holy. She’s singing to us and to God. She’s also singing to herself. With Jordin Sparks, Derek Luke, and Mike Epps. (PG-13; runs through Nov. 30)
