On Demand movie highlights

(Showtime on Comcast) What you might get if a French deconstructionist decided to make a drive-in flick. Director Mabrouk El Mechri reverse-engineers the mayhem until he locates the humor and the insecurity at the heart of the genre, and he allows Jean-Claude Van Damme to play what may be his greatest role — that of a has-been action-movie star named Jean-Claude Van Damme. In English and French, with subtitles. (R; runs through Nov. 26)

The Good Heart ½

(Showtime on Comcast) Brian Cox owns a bar straight out of ‘‘The Iceman Cometh.’’ He takes in a sweet-tempered homeless man (Paul Dano). There’s also a duck named Estragon — yes, it’s that kind of movie — who provides a crucial (and inexcusable) plot device. Cox overacts with gusto. Dano looks on in awe. The movie’s overall phoniness has to be seen — not that you should — to be disbelieved. (R; runs through Nov. 26)

Mark Feeney

(Encore on Comcast) Lightweight recycling of the old TV series. It’s mostly a series of witty curlicues, powered by the interplay of deadpan James Garner and fizzy Mel Gibson as the father-and-son Maverick team who can’t quite match the savvy of Jodie Foster as the woman who makes fools of them both. (PG; runs through Nov. 29)
