Critic’s corner: What’s on TV Wednesday


Toy Story of Terror! 8 p.m., ABC

The big screen gang of playthings is imperiled in this small screen romp as a fun road trip takes a scary detour at a roadside motel. The action picks up six months after the third film from 2010, and the main voice characters from the movie franchise are on board, including Tom Hanks as hero cowboy Woody, Tim Allen as astronaut Buzz Lightyear, and Joan Cusack as rootin’ tootin’ cowgirl Jessie. Although the description has a whiff of Norman Bates about it, since this is presumably for kids, we’re guessing — hoping — shrieky, stabby shower scenes are not on the agenda. That said, the director told the Wall Street Journal that “Toy Story of Terror!” took inspiration from the original “Alien” film, and if the title seemed too scary to parents, the film might be as well, so you might want to preview.

Burton and Taylor 9 p.m., BBC America

Liz and Dick’s tempestuous relationship gets another round of examination in this film starring Dominic West (“The Wire”) and Helena Bonham Carter (“Les Miserables”). The film focuses on their union during a 1983 revival of Noel Coward’s play “Private Lives.”

Red Sox vs. Detroit Tigers 8 p.m., Fox

Nova: Making Stuff Faster 9 p.m., Channel 2

Nashville 10 p.m., ABC
