Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: He’s a renegade cop leading an elite unit, doing what it takes to nab the bad guys, even if that means bending the rules. This spin-off of “Chicago Fire,” from “Law & Order” mastermind Dick Wolf, doesn’t break much new ground when it comes to the basic formula of the tried-and-true police procedural. There is the intelligence unit chasing down the big guns in the worlds of drug trafficking, gangs, and headline murders, while beat cops deal with more quotidian crimes. But an appealing cast, headed up by journeyman actor Jason Beghe as morally grey Sergeant Hank Voight, and compelling cases in the first few episodes could make “Chicago P.D.” a dependable viewing experience for fans of the genre.

People’s Choice Awards 9 p.m., CBS

Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs of “2 Broke Girls” host this fan-voted kudos-cast in which only the winners — in TV, movies, music — actually show up. So if you see a famous person in the audience, there’s a good chance they won something. We’re going to go out on a limb and predict Behrs and Dennings go home with the “Favorite TV Gal Pals” trophy.
