Hitch ½

(Starz on Comcast) A painless romantic comedy about a New York dating consultant, this Will Smith vehicle is easy to dismiss as predictable, shallow, chick-flick fluff. Actually, that’s what’s good about it. Smith is amusing, Eva Mendes gives a thankless role some bite, and, as the hero’s main client, Kevin James swims through the movie like Shamu in a water ballet. Below the smooth surface, though, the film’s deeply neurotic about modern love. (PG-13; runs through June 13)

Ty Burr

City of Angels ½

(Encore on Comcast) Surprisingly potent Hollywood remake of Wim Wenders’s magical “Wings of Desire.” This time around, the romance is front and center as angel Nicolas Cage wants to get earthy after meeting heart surgeon Meg Ryan, while she wants to go all ethereal after being struck by his sensitivity. Los Angeles is one of the stars, too. You’ve never seen it look so appealing as it does in the film’s angel’s-eye views above the traffic. (PG-13; runs through April 30)

Body Double

(Free on Comcast) Brian De Palma’s brilliant parody of actors, Hollywood, and filmmaking is not for the squeamish but for anyone who appreciates De Palma’s devilish wit. Be warned, the language is harsh and the single murder gruesome. (R; runs through May 8)
