Nominations for the 66th annual Primetime Emmy Awards were announced Thursday, with perennial favorites like AMC’s “Mad Men” and HBO’s “Game of Thrones” joining newcomers like that network’s “True Detective” among the dramas selected as television’s best.

“Breaking Bad” on AMC, which won the Emmy for best drama last year, was recognized for its acclaimed final season. Several of the show’s stars, including Bryan Cranston, was named in the lead actor category.

In the best comedy category, critics’ favorites like the cable sitcoms “Veep” and “Louie” were nominated alongside more popular network hits like “The Big Bang Theory” on CBS and ABC’s “Modern Family,” which has won the Emmy in each of the last four years. They were joined by two new shows: “Orange Is the New Black” on Netflix and HBOs “Silicon Valley.”
