The Book Thief

(Free on Comcast) This adaptation of Markus Zusak’s 2005 bestseller is unobjectionable, sentimental, and not a little dull. A tale of World War II Germany as seen through the eyes of a young girl (Sophie Nélisse), it re-creates the novel’s events while keeping them generic enough for everyone to agree on. Geoffrey Rush, as the heroine’s adoptive father, is the best thing here. (PG-13; runs through Nov. 1)

Rock of Ages½

(Free on Comcast) For those who can’t stop believin’ and fans of bizarro Tom Cruise performances. This star-studded adaptation of the Broadway jukebox musical, dedicated to the enduring power of cheesy ’80s pop-metal, alternates plastic bombast with moments of comic invention: It’s karaoke night on a Hollywood budget. Cruise plays an Axl-like rock god; Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, and two dull ingénues also appear. (PG-13; runs through Sept. 16)

Kicking and Screaming½

(Free on Comcast) This bright, graceful, entertaining debut feature by Noah Baumbach is one of the few comedies about 20-somethings to get it right, focusing with wit and poignance on four guys who can’t bring themselves to move on after college —- unlike the women in their lives, all of whom are a step ahead of them. (R; runs through Sept. 16)
