Sometimes, I can laugh just looking at Eliza Coupe’s face. The former star of “Happy Endings,” originally from New Hampshire, seems to have wryness and absurdity built into her physiognomy. I loved the entire cast of “Happy Endings” by the time the ABC sitcom was canceled after three seasons, but I loved Coupe best of all.
She’s one of the highlights of Hulu’s “Future Man,” a goofball sci-fi comedy series from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. She plays a video-game character named Tiger who, along with a character named Wolf (Derek Wilson), winds up in the real world. Wolf and Tiger team up with science-lab janitor Josh Futterman, played by Josh Hutcherson, to save humanity. Josh, a loser, must become a hero in this spoof of video games and the “Back to the Future” movies.
The farce, like the puns, the gross-out humor, and the pop culture jokes, can be excessive, especially over 13 episodes. But the charm of the cast, including Ed Begley Jr., Keith David, Haley Joel Osment, Martin Starr, and the late Glenne Headly, makes it all easy to watch.
