Red Sox vs. Cardinals in the World Series

Edward F. Carr/Globe Staff

This is the fourth time the Red Sox have played the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series. The 2004 series is hard to forget, with the Sox winning their first world title since 1918. But in both 1946 and 1967, the Cardinals won the series in seven games. The Sox hope to tie their record with the Cardinals in the coming week. In this photo from Sept. 27, 1946, Howard Gale of Dorchester happily showed off his $6 grandstand tickets to Game 5 of the World Series. The Red Sox, in front of 35,982 fans, won the game 6-3.
