Cirque du Soleil staging its first show on ice

Cirque du Soleil is preparing to take to the ice for what is billed as the first time in the global entertainment company’s history.

“Cirque du Soleil Crystal — A Breakthrough Ice Experience,’’ which will feature skating, sliding, and acrobatics, is scheduled for Dec. 7-10 at Worcester’s DCU Center.

As is often the case with Cirque du Soleil productions, “Crystal’’ has a story line of sorts, or a concept, anyway: A young woman transcends reality and reaches “a surreal world filled with possibility.’’ Yasmine Khalil, executive producer of “Crystal,’’ said in a prepared statement that “ice provides us with an entirely new field of play which also comes with a set of creative challenges.”

Specifically designed for arenas, “Crystal’’ will be Cirque du Soleil’s 42nd original production since 1984 but the first one to explore “the artistic attributes of ice,’’ according to a press release.
