‘SpongeBob’ star Gavin Lee to play the Grinch at the Wang Theatre
Gavin Lee, who proved he’s one of those performers who can make misanthropy entertaining with his hilarious portrayal of the cranky Squidward Q. Tentacles in “SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical,’’ will star as another notoriously grouchy creature in Boston this fall.
Lee is slated to play the Grinch in “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical’’ Nov. 28-Dec. 9 at the Boch Center Wang Theatre. “I am thrilled to step into the furry, stinky green shoes of the world’s most beloved Christmas bad boy this holiday season,” Lee said in a prepared statement. The British-born actor has two Tony nominations to his credit: one this year for his performance as the tap-dancing Squidward, and another for his portrayal of Bert the chimney sweep in the 2006 Broadway production of “Mary Poppins.’’
In other casting news regarding a show that is Boston-bound, Kaitlyn Mayse will play Ella in the national tour of “Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella,’’ slated for the newly reopened Emerson Colonial Theatre Dec. 18-30. Starring as Prince Topher, determined to find out whose foot fits the glass slipper, will be Lukas James Miller.
