Hood plans to give away free ice cream sandwiches Thursday at City Hall Plaza

Thursday is a red-letter day in the annals of food science and culinary arts --- It’s National Ice Cream Sandwich Day, and the Hood dairy brand plans to mark this momentous occasion by handing out free ice cream sandwiches on City Hall Plaza in Boston.

The ice-cream free-for-all is scheduled to run Thursday from noon to 2 p.m., rain or shine, Lynnfield-based Hood said.

To the wonderment of dessert-trolley connoisseurs throughout New England, Hood announced earlier this summer that three new ice cream sandwich flavors would be joining its classic Vanilla flavor for the 2012 ice cream sandwich season. The new options are Chocolate, Chocolate and Vanilla, and Cookies ‘n Cream.

Ice cream fun won’t be confined to the Hub. Ice cream sandwich giveaways are also scheduled for Hampton Beach, N.H.; Portland, Me.; and West Hartford, Conn.

As a special addition to the Portland event, plans call for the Hood Blimp to be flying overhead, Hood said.
