Investors discouraged by weak earnings

Nobody expected this round of earnings to be great. But underwhelming results — particularly revenue, which offers a read on the economy — are rattling investors. Weak revenue has led some to cut forecasts. Investors have been rewarding firms for increasing profit, but profit can be squeezed many ways; revenue offers a truer read on demand.
